Own a piece of modern South Africa that is authentic, rare and unforgettable. Where township life meets modern mastery.
“I pursued visual art because at various moments, maybe once every year, during my childhood I would see an image and something inside me, would say – without any doubt or ambiguity, draw that!”
My last two years of high school sticks out as examples where the same image compelled me to draw it once each year. That’s when I got the hunch. So, a subject, scene or circumstance must speak to me, compel me; the meaning will emerge, if it hasn’t hit me in the first instance.
My chosen medium has always instinctively been, colour, oils. And beauty is a goal to achieve but the inherent aesthetic of the subject may not be.
A curation of paintings selected for their silent power and timeless allure. Each work reflects the artist’s pursuit of beauty, sought out from the tensions of modern day South Africa; a study of ancestral form and present day soul.
My process isn’t free. For now, that is. I don’t splatter paint or fill the canvas haphazardly. I compose the scene as though through a lens; my subject matter dictates that.
I want the viewer to see what grabbed me. This is why I lay out the scene with graphite before i start painting. And I never finish a painting in a day. I simply cannot. No matter how small it is.
And I haven’t painted anything smaller than A4 since art school. Usually the last day of painting is the day after I’ve completed the work. I need to rest with it first.
For the astute lover of art, who’s pulled by the character of line work that achieves form, this is an invitation to commission a unique pen drawing.
Every stroke is both a deliberate mark and an exploration into the irrevocable unknown that transforms blank paper into a timeless art piece.
Your personal narrative is rendered with beautiful depth and texture that allows nuance to emerge and gives for an engaging experience.
This is a limited edition museum quality print collection. An edition of only 25 box sets will be made available to the global market for acquisition.
Neil’s painterly work is premium art, it’s timeless and it captures emotions well.
It reveals his thoughtfulness and creative energy behind the expressive brush strokes. I commissioned him a portrait of my mother and later, did one of my wonderful wife, which they’ll both be treasured forever.
What a gift it is to be seen. Thank you @neilatlantis for your artistry.
A couple of years ago I posted pic 3 after a gig where @kezia.myatt did the stunning make up that I am wearing. I posted the image as a WhatsApp status and Neil came back with this incredible
painting a while later.
My daughter and I were conceptualising angles and colours (photoshoot) and we shot this one with my eyes closed. I was looking up in African cornrows plaits. I really thought it was a cool shot so I posted it on social media.
I was really stoked when a fellow creative Neil resonated with the image as much as I did and captured it as a painting. That’s one of the most beautiful things I own. Thank you, Neil.
